Inspiration
The world is built on improving the lives of everyone living here. And as time goes on we have continued to watch technology become stronger, faster, and more secure, all in creating a more efficient world. But with new technology comes new world problems. Cybersecurity is a growing concern in today's society, and this is especially true when it relates to people's personal health information.
MediChain aims to make your life easier, and better protect your information at the same time.
What it does
MediChain is essentially a digital "filing cabinet" for all of your medical records, prescriptions, health insurance information, and discharge paperwork. And similar to a physical filing cabinet in a home office, MediChain also uses a locking mechanism to securely store one's records away from prying eyes. The unique component of MediChain's solution is that it uses Blockchain technology as its method of security. Blockchain, independent of any organization, business, or government, is virtually impossible to hack and offers the most powerful protection against cyber criminals. Utilizing a personal key, Blockchain within our application ensures that only YOU have access to those records.
With its drawer like system, MediChain organizes all of a patient's medical files neatly, digitally, and at your finger tips. One of its features includes a digital sharing option, via a QR code. This allows patients to know with whom they are sharing, and from whom they are receiving medical information from. Medical providers would implement MediChain into their own system to increase the quality of care their patients receive.
How we built it
We built this application using JavaScript as the language and React as the framework. The application was built as a multi-page app in which the pages are connected by a router. The base of the application for functionality was to use the built-in crypto module that is found when the "create-react-app" is entered in the command line, when creating the application.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges that we ran into would be understanding how to develop a blockchain with its functionalities. Creating a simple blockchain would be an easy task, but reading the actual chain is a bit more difficult.
Another noteworthy challenge was deciding what the look and feel of the application would have as it is an application designed to be used regularly by clients; user experience is key.
And finally, as it is important to mention, our team was very small. After losing three of our initial team members, we simply did not have adequate man-power. We were not able to accomplish as much as we had hoped on the technical aspects of MediChain. However we can not sell ourselves short. Our mighty team of three persevered through the challenge, and developed a notable solution.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
There are several accomplishments in this challenge that we are all proud of. First and foremost would be our application and the research done in order to provide the solution to our problem. Another accomplishment would be that even though our team was small, we still came up with an idea that is worth developing. Also, our team worked together very fluidly to tackle any tasks and challenges at hand.
What we learned
We learned how to work together as a small team. We communicated and encouraged one another while navigating the challenges that arose throughout the project. We adapted to change in team size and organized the content deliverables in a productive, manageable format. We also learned essential skills needed for success in the tech industry, startups, and other career avenues.
What's next for MediChain
We really need to expand our team. The MediChain application needs to be expanded, improved aesthetically, and built with more functionality. A larger technical team would be able to put all of our ideas into motion, and create a user-friendly application. After building MediChain into a marketable product and obtaining investor funding, MediChain will be ready to improve healthcare services all across the nation.
