💡 Inspiration
As hackers with personal and familial ties to the healthcare journey, we know how harrowing the experience can be, and we wanted to make the process a little easier for patients and their loved ones. MediCal is a web application that does exactly that.
💻 What it does
MediCal is a user-friendly healthcare assistant, designed to effortlessly streamline the management of appointments, medical events, medications, and important documents, all within a convenient calendar-based dashboard. The web application targets individuals struggling to keep up with the stresses and disruptions a medical issue may cause in one's life, but it also extends its support to the caregivers of those experiencing health challenges or disabilities. Utilizing the power of Artificial Intelligence, MediCal simplifies this process by automatically integrating medical appointments and events from uploaded files or emails sent to the patient. With MediCal, patients can:
- Get any appointment info that was sent to their email automatically added to the calendar schedule
- View all their upcoming appointments/events in a monthly calendar format
- View their medication schedule and receive medication alerts for both themselves and their loved ones
- Keep track of their reminders
- Store medical files in one organized space
⚙️ How we built it
We identified a problem we were both passionate about solving and developed a solution using:
- Figma for the prototype
- Canva for the logo and designs
- React, HTML, CSS, JavaScript for the frontend
- Cloudflare Pages for deployment
- GitHub
❗️ Challenges we ran into
As a group of two, we were faced with many challenges that pushed us to grow and adapt. Among these challenges, a prominent one stemmed from our limited familiarity with UI/UX design and back-end development. Neither of us had much of a software background besides the coding classes we had taken. It was also a challenge for us to adjust to the structure of a hackathon and the goals we needed to set. Another major challenge we faced was narrowing down our app into specific functionalities while taking time constraints into account.
⭐️ Accomplishments that we're proud of
As beginner hackers, we're proud of our swift ability to learn how to design a user-friendly UI with Figma, despite having no prior experience with the platform. The learning curve was steep, but it fueled our determination to bring our idea, MediCal, to life. We are also proud of coming up with the idea of MediCal, as we recognize its potential to impact our lives and those of our loved ones. For us, this project became more than just a hackathon; it became a passion project that fueled our excitement for creation.
📚 What we learned
We learned that there are many skills required to be able to make an app and having limited time and resources can pose quite a challenge. While we focused the majority of this hackathon on the frontend portion of our web application, we learned how to use Figma in only one day. We also learned more about the basics of frontend and backend coding, as well as how to use Cloudflare Pages to deploy our web app, by doing our own research and following tutorials throughout the day.
🔮 What's next for MediCal
With more time to develop this web application, we would have liked to fully implement AI technology using the OpenAI API to be able to identify medical-related appointments and events from a patient's emails and automatically add these to their calendar. We would have also implemented the backend functionalities of the app.
