Inspiration

Mystery/puzzle games like Professor Layton and Nancy Drew, and the very first video games/text adventure games like Colossal Cave Adventure were our main sources of inspiration.

What it does

Our project is a mystery game that relies primarily on text-based storytelling methods to convey the plot. Players will have to use the evidence (either more explicitly conveyed or more implied through context clues) that they uncover and piece everything together logically in order to uncover the truth. How we built it

We used repl.it/Replit and Python to build our project/game.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges we ran into include: coming up with a watertight & complex story that is not too overly complicated, mapping out all of the routes/scenarios of the game, and coding all of the different routes. We also had some trouble in the beginning with starting the project and figuring out what platforms/tools to use, because none of us have any experience with game & app development (we're all BME majors!).

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Some accomplishments that we're proud of include being able to: come up with a compelling mystery story; map out our entire game with multiple routes in a few hours; code some parts of the game using multiple written functions.

What we learned

Creating a text-adventure mystery game relies heavily on a watertight story/plot! Putting yourself in the player's perspective can help with creating a game and its plot.

What's next for Tropical Trouble 🌴: Whodunit?🔍

Finish coding all of the routes we planned out during the hackathon. Add images and more layers of complexity, possibly by adding more characters (potential suspects) and/or routes.
