Inspiration
Navigating healthcare can be overwhelming, especially when faced with confusing medical jargon. Many people receive diagnoses, lab reports, or prescriptions and feel anxious simply because they don’t fully understand what they mean. We wanted to bridge this gap by creating a tool that brings clarity and peace of mind. MediBuddy was born out of a desire to empower individuals with knowledge and make medical language accessible to everyone regardless of their background.
What it does
MediBuddy simplifies complex medical terminology into clear, everyday language. Users can input diagnoses, lab results, or medication names, and receive easy-to-understand explanations, along with related conditions, treatment options, and trusted resources. It acts as a friendly translator for medical information, giving users the confidence and understanding they need to actively participate in their healthcare decisions.
How we built it
We built MediBuddy using a combination of AI agents using Agent Bricks, a robust medical terminology database, and a clean, intuitive front-end interface with streamlit. The app uses a backend powered by machine learning models trained to identify and simplify complex medical terms.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was ensuring the simplified explanations maintained medical accuracy while being easy to understand and not giving alarming responses. Striking the balance between clarity and correctness required multiple iterations and expert feedback. Another challenge was sourcing high-quality, up-to-date medical data that was both comprehensive and legally usable. Designing an intuitive UX that works for users with varying levels of tech literacy was also a learning curve.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of creating a functional MVP that accurately translates complex medical information into language anyone can understand. Our integration of trusted medical resources and development of a reliable terminology simplification model were significant milestones.
What we learned
We learned that health literacy is a huge, often overlooked issue, and even small improvements in understanding can make a big difference in a person’s healthcare journey. We also gained deeper insight into the ethical responsibilities of providing medical information and the importance of balancing simplicity with precision. From a technical perspective, we learned how to work with AI Agents in the Databricks Platform
What's next for MediBuddy
Next, we plan to expand MediBuddy’s capabilities to support voice input and multilingual translation to reach more users. We’re also working on partnerships with clinics and telehealth platforms to integrate MediBuddy into real-time healthcare interactions. Additionally, we aim to refine our AI model with user feedback and explore certification to become a more official and trusted medical tool.
