Inspiration

For our design, we were inspired by the common struggle of taking care of our mental health as college students. With the constant stress of school and work, the coronavirus pandemic, and the many apps that take our focus and shorten our attention span, we were compelled to create a product that would be simple yet keep us connected during these difficult times. We wanted a product that allows us to think about how we were feeling instead of resorting to a source of distraction.

What it does

Mediate allows the user to track their daily mood, while also giving the opportunity to talk to a friend who is on the app and has tracked theirs. If the user desires, they are also able to connect with other available users who share the same mood anonymously and chat about how they're feeling. Another feature is that Mediate provides the user positive affirmations to send to friends, reminders that allow users to express that they're thinking about one another.

How we built it

We built Mediate's design using Figma, while using resources from Icons8 and online stock images.

Challenges we ran into

There was some challenge in animating Mediate's prototype, such as for the weekly mood tracker. There was also an issue in creating a background blur whenever a popup button appeared, but we decided to darken the background instead.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of Mediate's overall concept, as it is a design for an app that allows a space for individuals to express their feelings while destigmatizing conversation about mental health. Users don't have to worry about who to open up to on the app, because friends and other users in the community who have decided to sign up are available to give and receive the support they need. The anonymity feature allows user's to branch outside of their friend group and can feel like there are people all around the world who feel the same way they do and that they are not alone. Our app's simplistic design allows for easy mood tracking and sending affirmations to others.

What we learned

As beginners in design, we learned how to use Figma and its tools to create Mediate. We became more knowledgable about the design process along with time management in finishing our project. We worked as a team to learn fundamental UX skills such as creating user flows, wireframing, prototyping, and adding animations. We also got the chance to learn how to apply our user research to come up with an innovative product.

What's next for Mediate

Our design for Mediate may be further enhanced to provide more detailed information regarding mood tracking. We could provide more options for positive affirmations as well as the ability for users to suggest their own. We may further develop Mediate to contain resources for mental health. Looking over our project, we also noticed lots of room for improvement. Some features we thought about improving was to include a right to left animation of text when listing the names for who to chat with in the case someone's name is too long and won't fit on the button.
