Inspiration
Currently, we both have many different apps for tracking our media and find it really hard to get good recommendations that cater to our tastes. After conferring with friends, we realized that this was a common problem, so we decided this was the perfect time to address it!
What it does
MediaHub is a central space to store all your media activity and not only will you be able to track the media you interact with, the application will give you recommendations based off all your media interests. In terms of media, we hope to include movies, TV shows, books, music, video games and so on. In having so many avenues of interests, users get recommendations that have a higher chance of catering to their own interests. It will also be able to recommend media based on other users with similar interests.
How I built it
Currently, the app is a series of static web pages representing login, signup, recommendations page and the overall flow of the app.
Challenges I ran into
Initially, setting up ruby on rails hindered progress as there were issues with connecting to both the database and Heroku. After this delay, we had to adapt and decided to build the static pages to demo our product in the time we had remaining.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
As this is Julia's first hackathon, she's proud of the fact that she adapted quickly to the challenges we faced. We're proud of our idea, and the fact that we were able to design and build something to show you.
What I learned
We learned quite a lot about Ruby on Rails and the underlying technologies. We had an opportunity to practice our full stack skills.
What's next for MediaHub
In future, we plan to use ruby on rails to implement this application using APIs such as Goodreads and Trakt.tv. On the gaming side, we were thinking of integrating with existing applications such Steam that track gaming progress.
