Inspiration

The healthcare infrastructure in many developing regions still relies on manual, paper-based logging for pharmacy transactions. This leads to frequent inventory mismanagement, "out-of-stock" crises, and financial leakages. Medi-Store was born from the need to provide a high-speed, clinical-grade billing and inventory system that combines the simplicity of a modern POS with the robust reporting of an ERP.

What it does

Medi-Store is a specialized Pharmacy Management System designed for precision and speed.

  • High-Speed Billing: Optimized for pharmacists who need to handle peak traffic with keyboard-only navigation and real-time salt formula (generic) matching.
  • Intelligent Inventory: Automated "Low Stock" alerts and real-time valuation of stock based on multi-decimal precision.
  • Financial Integrity: Tracks net profit vs. revenue and handles complex proportional refund logic for partial returns.
  • Security First: Role-based access control (Admin vs. Pharmacist) secured by industry-standard JWT authentication.

How we built it

The project follows a modern Cloud-Native architecture:

  • The Engine (Backend): Built with Java and Spring Boot, leveraging Spring Security for hardware-agnostic authentication. We implemented a custom high-priority CORS filter to ensure secure but flexible cross-origin communication.
  • The Interface (Frontend): A high-performance React SPA built with Vite. We opted for a Glassmorphism design language to make the clinical environment feel premium and accessible.
  • The Data (Cloud): Deployed on a professional hybrid cloud stack—Azure Database for PostgreSQL for data persistence, Azure App Service for the core engine, and Vercel for the global delivery of the frontend.

Challenges we faced

Synchronizing complex financial math across currencies and return scenarios was a significant hurdle. We developed a proprietary Proportional Refund Algorithm to ensure that when a customer returns 2 units of a 10-unit invoice that had a bulk discount, the pharmacist's profit metrics remain 100% accurate. We also overcame critical CORS preflight challenges during the migration to a custom .me domain, ensuring seamless secure handshakes between Vercel and Azure.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully moved from a localhost prototype to a Live Production Deployment at medistore.me. The system successfully handles concurrent operations with sub-second response times, and the database architecture is scaled to handle over 10,000 unique medicine brands without performance degradation.

What we learned

We learned the importance of Observability in cloud environments. Monitoring the "cold start" latency of Azure App Service and optimizing environment variable synchronization between frontend and backend were vital lessons in building production-ready SaaS.

What's next for Medi-Store

Our roadmap includes an AI-driven Stock Forecasting module that predicts when stock will run out based on seasonal trends, and a Pharmacy-to-Patient WhatsApp integration for automated prescription refills.
