Inspiration

MediNavi JAPAN began with a problem I encountered firsthand while working as a nurse at a clinic in Japan.

I repeatedly saw patients struggle to find the right medical facility. Some patients who needed surgical treatment arrived at an internal medicine clinic. Others were sent from one medical facility to another because they could not identify the appropriate place to receive care.

Searching online does not always solve this problem. Even AI-powered searches may recommend large university hospitals instead of practical, nearby clinics that match the patient’s symptoms, preferred language, location, and actual access needs.

A search result is not always the same as an appropriate healthcare decision.

This challenge is even greater for international visitors and students. When someone is sick, in pain, and unfamiliar with the Japanese healthcare system, it can be extremely difficult to understand which medical specialty they need, whether a clinic is open, whether it supports their language, and whether they can visit without an appointment.

As a registered nurse and public health professional, I wanted to create a clearer and more practical path to care.

That idea became MediNavi JAPAN.

What it does

MediNavi JAPAN is a multilingual medical-facility navigation platform for international visitors and students in Japan.

The app helps users find appropriate medical facilities based on practical conditions such as:

  • Symptoms and medical specialty
  • Current location
  • Supported languages
  • Opening hours
  • Night and weekend availability
  • Walk-in availability
  • Self-pay options
  • Emergency guidance

Instead of simply displaying a list of hospitals and clinics, MediNavi JAPAN is designed to help users understand what to do next.

For example, an English-speaking visitor in Tokyo with a fever can start from their symptoms, identify internal medicine as the appropriate department, filter for English-speaking clinics, check which facilities are open, and then open the map, call the clinic, or visit its website.

The platform currently includes information for thousands of medical facilities in Tokyo using public healthcare data.

We also developed Nurse Guide Japan, an online medical-concierge service that complements the app.

When users are still unsure, they can contact a licensed Japanese nurse through LINE, WhatsApp, or email. The nurse listens to their concerns, assesses urgency within the nursing scope, and helps them identify the appropriate next step.

This support may include:

  • Guidance to a suitable medical facility
  • Assistance with clinic reservations
  • Connection to an online physician consultation
  • Support with medical or insurance-related documents
  • Emergency guidance when the user should call 119

Nurses do not diagnose conditions or prescribe medication. Medical diagnoses and prescriptions are provided by licensed physicians.

Together, the app and online support service create a connected journey:

How we built it

The initial version of MediNavi JAPAN was developed using AI-assisted development tools, including Claude, together with web-development platforms and public medical-facility data.

The application was built as a web-based service that includes:

  • Multilingual medical-facility search
  • Symptom and specialty navigation
  • Language and availability filters
  • Medical-facility details
  • Map and contact functions
  • Emergency guidance
  • Links to online nursing and physician consultation support

During OpenAI Build Week, we used Codex with GPT-5.6 to review and improve the existing application.

GPT-5.6 helped us analyze the platform from both technical and user-experience perspectives. We used it to inspect the implementation, identify potential issues, review the search and navigation flow, and propose practical improvements for international users who may be sick, anxious, or unfamiliar with healthcare in Japan.

Codex was used to support code review, debugging, and improvements to the reliability and usability of the application.

One of our main design principles was simplicity. A person who is unwell should not need to understand the entire Japanese healthcare system before finding help.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was that medical-facility information is fragmented.

A clinic may publish information about its medical specialties, supported languages, opening hours, reservation policy, and payment options in different places. Even when the information exists, it is not always structured in a way that helps a patient make an immediate decision.

Another challenge was avoiding misleading recommendations.

Healthcare navigation is not the same as an ordinary location search. Recommending the nearest facility is not useful if it does not treat the user’s condition, is closed, does not support the required language, or requires an appointment.

We also had to clearly define the boundary between medical-facility navigation, nursing support, and medical diagnosis. The service must help users reach appropriate care without presenting nursing guidance as a physician’s diagnosis.

Another challenge was integrating an existing project into the OpenAI Build Week workflow. Because the first version had already been developed, we needed to make the contribution of Codex and GPT-5.6 clear through specific reviews, code changes, product improvements, and demonstrations.

Finally, we had to design for users who may be stressed, in pain, or communicating in a second language. This required reducing unnecessary choices and presenting clear, actionable next steps.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that MediNavi JAPAN was created from a real healthcare-access problem observed in clinical practice.

It is not simply a hospital directory. It is an attempt to reduce confusion, prevent unnecessary referrals, and help international visitors reach appropriate care more efficiently.

We are also proud that the platform connects digital navigation with human nursing support.

An app can provide structured information, but there are situations in which a user still needs reassurance, clarification, or assistance communicating with a medical provider. Nurse Guide Japan helps bridge that gap.

Another important accomplishment is that we created a working service using real medical-facility information rather than only producing a conceptual prototype.

The project demonstrates a complete healthcare-access journey:

Search → Understand → Decide → Connect to care

What we learned

We learned that improving healthcare access is not simply about providing more information.

The real challenge is turning fragmented information into an understandable and actionable path.

We also learned that AI is especially valuable when combined with professional domain knowledge.

GPT-5.6 and Codex helped us examine the product more systematically, identify implementation issues, and consider improvements from the user’s perspective. However, real-world nursing and public-health experience was essential for determining which problems actually mattered.

The strongest results came from combining AI-assisted development with clinical experience.

We also learned the importance of transparency in healthcare-related products. Users need to understand:

  • What the service can do
  • What the service cannot do
  • When nursing guidance is appropriate
  • When a physician is required
  • When an emergency call to 119 is necessary

This clarity is essential for creating a service that is both useful and responsible.

What's next for Medi NAVI JAPAN

Our next goal is to improve the accuracy and freshness of medical-facility information.

We plan to expand coverage beyond Tokyo and strengthen the platform through partnerships with:

  • Clinics and hospitals
  • Hotels
  • Universities
  • Travel companies
  • Local governments
  • Insurance providers

We also plan to improve:

  • Symptom-based navigation
  • Distance-based searches
  • Real-time opening and availability information
  • Multilingual communication support
  • Online physician consultation connections
  • Coordination between online support and in-person care

In the future, MediNavi JAPAN could also be offered to hotels, universities, travel companies, and local governments as part of their support systems for international visitors and residents.

Our long-term vision is to create a more welcoming and healthcare-accessible environment for international visitors.

We want to build that model in Japan—and eventually share it with the world.
