Inspiration
MedHerent was inspired due to my Digital Health class project for graduate school. We had to come up with an idea to use contextually sensitive alerts for greater adoption of medication adherence for our chosen target population, which were older adults (50 years of age+) who took medication on a consistent basis.
What it does
MedHerent is an app that includes features unlike other health apps, such as trivia and jokes as alerts, time sensitive reminders, calendar tracking for medications, healthy rewards which are earned each time the user logs in their medications, streaks that are maintained between the user and the app or if the user wishes, it can be visible to their friends on the app. These features provide a competitive edge for MedHerent, addressing user needs but also allowing them to look at their medications and treatment journeys in a positive light!
How I built it
Primarily, Figma was used to build and design this app's user interfaces and notifications/alerts. Persona development and interviews played a large role in building this app and tailoring the features to align with our target audience.
Challenges I ran into
There were challenges in creating an app that can appeal to our target audience and be feasible and simple enough for them to use. Some older adults have low levels of digital literacy and even low levels of health literacy. However, we ensured our app was easy to navigate and provided educational features, so patients and their respective caregivers understand the medications and the reasoning behind them.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I'm proud of creating an app that is unlike other health apps, catering to a vulnerable population's needs in a beneficial way and making the journey fun for the patient or caregiver rather than a burden.
What I learned
I learned the importance of focusing on a target audience and the process of persona creation. Without our personas, it would be difficult for us to apply certain features to our users and understand what is essential to our app versus what we can omit. I also learned how important it is to take into consideration ranges of demographics, such as those with low digital literacy, low health literacy, competitive mindsets, etc.
What's next for MedHerent
Ideally, to broaden MedHerent's reach and publicize it to more patients both inside and outside of our target population, we would want to partner up with hospitals and EHR systems to establish the interoperability connection and trust amongst the market. Simultaneously, it'd be helpful for us to obtain more funding for additional features and to go live with our product.
