Inspiration
Since there is a sharp increase in the number of natural disasters in today's world, emergency medical services are needed more than ever. Also, while governmental and private emergency responders do an amazing job at rescuing people and helping people in drastic medical conditions, they can not always tend to the needs of everyone in need of them in a timely fashion. Therefore, we thought that a citizen approach to providing emergency services in drastic situations would yield to a more timely service and therefore a higher survival rate.
What it does
The app connects CPR and EMT certified individuals and people who possess an AED, EpiPen, Narcan or insulin to people in medical emergencies requiring such help or resources to provide a more timely service when professional services are not readily available. It also connects EMTs to citizens in need with a chat interface if necessary.
How we built it
We built an Android app with Android Studio, Java, and Fireface database to connect volunteers to people in need.
Challenges we ran into
Implementing the live GPS tracking functionality was a little challenging but we were able to get it done.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of being able to finish an app with a challenging front-end and back-end and of being able to use Fireface for the first time.
What we learned
We learned how to use Firebase for database management and for the backend of social networking style apps.
What's next for MedHelp- Crowd-sourcing medical help for the masses
Refine it, test it more, build a website for it and finally release it on the app stores!
