Inspiration
As future RN's, our innovation is inspired by the real-world problems our peers, mentors, teachers, and future selves are facing every day in the field of healthcare and eager to reduce patient risk without dehumanizing patient care.
What it does
RN2B reduces human error without dehumanizing patient care through automated critical attention interventions that integrate our information system infrastructure that will manifest a comprehensive database to eliminate medication error, patient risk, and provider fear without overburdening our frontline users.
How we built it
We built RN2B conceptually by understanding the current technologies in health care, such as EPIC, infusion machines, and various databases patient and medicine information is stored within the hospital, understanding the currently flow (and gaps) in the current process which gives room for human error, and recognizing that expensive new technologies aren't accessible solutions for most hospitals - our technology would be a system upgrade to an existing technology (Pyxis and EPIC) and therefore more accessible and a quicker implementation.
Challenges we ran into
Limited coding experience - so we are eager to collaborate with the technical software developers who can help take this across the finish line.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
When briefing this to an experienced nurse leader of over 19 years, she was impressed with its ability to actually positively impact floors and make worker experiences on the frontline more efficient, while many technology implementations are often sometimes harder on the workers.
What we learned
That cross-industry collaboration is needed to affect large changes and advance healthcare; developers, hospital leaders, educators, nurses, doctors, social workers, AND patients should be involved in innovating these solutions!
What's next for MedHack 2022 RN2B
Reduce medication error : wrong medication, contradicting medications/compatibility, wrong route of administration/ dosage inaccuracies , time discrepancies, Reduce Patient Risk: three phased IA verified built in checks that integrates and improves communication between physician, nurse, pharmacist, and patient care team.
Empower Confident and Safe Providers: already over tasked and understaffed providers can save time from manually looking up medication compatibilities, mitigate error in verbal/written transfer of patient care, and ensure patient data ( weight, age, allergies…) are clearly communicated with pharmaceutical team, physician, and administrating staff. Hard backed system checks and balances.
