MedGuard
Inspiration
Healthcare professionals spend a significant amount of time manually reviewing medical documents, extracting patient information, verifying insurance details, and coordinating appointments. These repetitive administrative tasks can delay patient care and increase operational costs.
We were inspired to create MedGuard to demonstrate how intelligent automation can streamline the healthcare journey. Our goal was to transform unstructured medical documents into actionable healthcare workflows, reducing manual effort and helping patients receive the right care faster.
What it does
MedGuard is an AI-powered healthcare automation platform that processes medical documents and automatically guides patients toward appropriate care.
The solution performs the following steps:
- Accepts medical documents in PDF or image format.
- Uses OCR to extract text from the document.
- Identifies patient information such as name, date of birth, and insurance details.
- Detects symptoms, diagnoses, and medical conditions from the extracted text.
- Uses AI to recommend the most appropriate medical specialist.
- Verifies the availability of insurance information.
- Creates an appointment scheduling request.
- Generates a comprehensive summary report for healthcare staff.
This enables healthcare providers to process patient cases faster while improving consistency and reducing administrative workload.
How we built it
MedGuard was built using UiPath's automation platform and AI-powered document processing capabilities.
The workflow begins when a medical document is uploaded. OCR technology extracts text from the document and stores it for analysis. AI models then identify patient information, symptoms, diagnoses, and insurance details.
Business rules and intelligent decision-making logic are used to recommend the most appropriate specialist based on the patient's condition. The workflow then validates insurance information, prepares appointment scheduling details, and generates a structured summary report.
The entire process is orchestrated through UiPath automation workflows, demonstrating how AI and automation can work together to improve healthcare operations.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was designing a workflow that could process a variety of medical document formats while maintaining accuracy.
Additional challenges included:
- Extracting structured information from unstructured medical documents.
- Mapping symptoms to the correct medical specialists.
- Designing an insurance verification workflow that can handle incomplete information.
- Building a scalable process that could be extended to real-world healthcare systems.
- Learning and integrating advanced UiPath AI and document processing capabilities within a limited development timeframe.
What we learned
Through this project we gained hands-on experience with:
- Intelligent Document Processing (IDP)
- Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
- AI-assisted healthcare automation
- Workflow orchestration using UiPath
- Exception handling and business rule implementation
- End-to-end automation design for healthcare scenarios
We also learned how AI and automation can significantly reduce administrative overhead while helping healthcare providers focus more on patient care.
What's next for MedGuard
Future enhancements include:
- Real-time integration with hospital management systems.
- Integration with insurance provider APIs.
- Automated appointment booking with healthcare calendars.
- AI-powered risk assessment and patient prioritization.
- Secure patient portals for document upload and status tracking.
- Advanced analytics dashboards for healthcare providers.
Our vision is to create a fully automated healthcare coordination platform that helps patients move from document submission to specialist care in the shortest possible time.
Impact
MedGuard demonstrates how intelligent automation can bridge the gap between medical documentation and patient care. By combining OCR, AI analysis, workflow automation, and healthcare decision support, the platform helps healthcare organizations deliver faster, more efficient, and more accessible care.
