Inspiration

Medication and treatment errors are among the most common preventable causes of patient harm. In a busy clinical setting, a prescriber can miss an allergy conflict, a duplicate therapy, or an unsafe dose until after the order is signed. We wanted a lightweight console that puts a second pair of eyes on every planned action BEFORE it is signed off.

What it does

MedGate is a Clinical Action Review Console. The clinician enters the patient context and the planned action (a medication order, procedure, or test). MedGate checks the plan against the patient's record (allergies, active medications, recent labs, documented conditions) and flags risky or conflicting steps with a clear, human-readable reason, so the clinician can review before signing off. Every review is kept in an audit trail.

How we built it

MedGate is a static web application built with HTML, CSS and JavaScript and hosted on GitHub Pages, so it runs entirely in the browser with no backend and no patient data leaving the demo page. The check logic is plain JavaScript: structured rules (allergy conflicts, duplicate therapy, dose ranges, documented conditions) run over a demo patient dataset bundled with the app, and each check produces an explanation the reviewer can accept or override.

Challenges we ran into

  • Deciding what a flag should look like: too noisy and reviewers ignore it, too quiet and it misses real risk. We tuned the rule set so every flag comes with an explanation instead of hiding any.
  • Keeping the review flow fast. Everything runs client-side, so a review completes instantly with no network round-trip.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

A working, log-in-free demo judges can open immediately and walk through a complete review-to-signoff flow.

What we learned

How to structure clinical review rules so each one stays explainable, and how much of a safety tool's value is in the explanation, not just the detection.

What's next for MedGate

  • Connect the rule engine to a real EHR-style data source behind proper authentication.
  • Add role-based review (a pharmacist countersign step) and export of the audit trail.
  • Explore LLM-assisted drafting of review notes, with the deterministic rule checks always applied on top.

Honest scope note

MedGate is a front-end prototype running on a bundled demo dataset. All checks are deterministic rules over that dataset; there is no live patient data, no backend, and no real clinical integration. It was built as a personal project before this hackathon's window and is being submitted as pre-existing work; nothing about it was created during the 48-hour event.
