Inspiration Our inspiration for MedEase came from recognizing the challenges faced by individuals with visual impairments, the elderly, and those struggling to keep track of multiple medications. We wanted to create an app that simplifies medication management, ensuring everyone has access to accurate, easy-to-understand information, helping them take control of their health confidently.
What it does MedEase allows users to scan medication barcodes and instantly hear essential details like dosage, purpose, and special instructions. Designed with accessibility in mind, it empowers users by providing clear, spoken guidance for safe medication use.
How we built it We built MedEase using React Native for cross-platform functionality, with Expo’s Camera and Text-to-Speech libraries to support scanning and audio playback. We integrated the RxNorm API for reliable medication information and focused on an accessible, high-contrast UI that’s user-friendly for our target audience.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was ensuring barcode scanning accuracy, especially across different brands and medications. Additionally, balancing accessibility features with simplicity required careful design decisions to make sure the app was both functional and intuitive.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud to have developed a solution that could make a meaningful impact in people’s lives by enhancing accessibility in healthcare. MedEase is simple yet powerful, providing users with the guidance they need in a matter of seconds. Completing this app within the hackathon timeframe is an accomplishment we’re truly proud of.
What we learned
Throughout this project, we gained deeper insights into accessibility design, voice technology, and healthcare needs. We also strengthened our skills in integrating APIs, handling diverse user requirements, and building a solution within a limited time.
What's next for MedEase
Our next step is to add features like medication reminders, multilingual support, and secure sharing with caregivers or doctors. We also plan to refine the scanning capability for even greater accuracy and explore partnerships with healthcare providers to expand MedEase’s impact.
