Inspiration

The healthcare sector often faces challenges in securely managing patient data, where privacy and accuracy are critical. We were inspired by the potential of blockchain technology to provide a secure, immutable, and transparent solution for storing and accessing medical records. Additionally, integrating AI to assist with health queries and deliver personalized insights creates a more user-friendly and interactive experience for patients and doctors. Our vision is to revolutionize medical record management while giving users control over their sensitive data and streamlining the workflow for healthcare professionals.

What it does

Meck is a blockchain-based platform that securely manages patient medical records, ensuring only authorized doctors can access or modify these records. Patients can view their medical history, and doctors can add new records. The platform integrates AI, which allows users to ask health-related questions, providing quick insights. For further interactions and personalized advice, users are prompted to log in or sign up. In the future, sensitive information could also be restricted so that patients cannot view certain critical medical details unless approved by a doctor.

How we built it

We built Meck with a HTML5-based frontend and Node.js/Express.js backend. The blockchain layer uses smart contracts deployed on the Ethereum testnet (Sepolia) to store and manage medical records in an immutable way. Verified doctors can interact with the smart contract to update patient records, while patients can securely access their own data. We integrated Web3.js to connect with the smart contract and included Web3Auth for decentralized authentication. AI functionality was added to allow users to ask health-related questions, with responses generated using dummy data for demonstration purposes.

Challenges we ran into

One of the major challenges was ensuring that sensitive patient data remains private while leveraging blockchain's immutability. This required carefully designing the smart contract to restrict access only to verified doctors. Another challenge was creating a user-friendly interface that simplifies blockchain interactions for users who may not be familiar with the technology. Lastly, integrating AI for health insights while keeping it scalable and responsive, especially for different health queries, was a complex task.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of creating a secure and privacy-focused medical record platform that leverages blockchain technology for real-world healthcare problems. Successfully integrating an AI chatbot to provide quick health insights is also a major accomplishment, making Meck more interactive and helpful to users. Additionally, the seamless interaction between Web3 authentication, blockchain, and the user interface provides a solid foundation for future scalability and features.

What we learned

Throughout this project, we learned a great deal about balancing security, privacy, and usability in a healthcare application. Blockchain's immutability offers great benefits but requires careful thought about access control, especially in such a sensitive area as medical records. We also learned about the potential of AI in healthcare, specifically in providing users with immediate answers to common health questions. Moreover, integrating modern web technologies like Web3.js and AI into one coherent solution helped us refine our development and problem-solving skills.

What's next for MedBlock

Moving forward, we plan to add more sophisticated AI functionalities that can provide deeper health insights based on actual medical records. We will also focus on encrypting medical files and integrating IPFS for decentralized file storage. In the next phase, we aim to implement restricted record access, where patients cannot view certain critical records unless authorized by their doctor. Additionally, we want to expand our platform to support multi-chain environments and partner with healthcare providers to pilot the platform in real-world use cases.
