About the Project

Inspiration

MedAssist was inspired by a real experience. A close friend of ours needed to regularly visit his doctor for an eye condition, but getting proper care was often difficult. Sometimes the clinic queue was too long, other times the doctor was unavailable, or appointment information wasn't clear. These repeated delays made something as simple as seeing a doctor unnecessarily stressful.

This experience made us realize that many clinics struggle not because of medical issues, but because of inefficient patient intake, scheduling, and communication, especially in environments with high patient volume and language diversity. MedAssist was born to solve these everyday problems.

What We Built

MedAssist is a multilingual AI-powered patient intake and appointment assistant that works directly on WhatsApp, removing the need for patients to download a new app.

The system: - Automates patient intake through chat - Schedules appointments based on doctor availability - Sends appointment reminders to reduce no-shows - Routes structured data to a clinic dashboard - Supports multiple languages to reduce communication barriers

How We Built It

MedAssist was built collaboratively by two people:

  • Backend & WhatsApp Integration:\ I handled the backend services, appointment logic, and WhatsApp API integration.

  • AI & Frontend:\ My teammate, Akeem, built the AI service responsible for multilingual conversations and the frontend dashboard.

Challenges We Faced

One major challenge was time. The hackathon deadline required careful prioritization.

Another challenge was designing reliable appointment scheduling logic, including plans to integrate Google Calendar while avoiding conflicts.

What We Learned

We learned how accessible AI solutions can meaningfully improve healthcare workflows when designed around real human problems.

What's Next for MedAssist

Our next goal is to evolve MedAssist from a hackathon MVP into a production-ready healthcare assistant. Planned improvements include:

  • Full Google Calendar integration for real-time doctor availability and automatic conflict resolution\
  • Enhanced AI triage, allowing patients to be routed based on urgency\
  • Stronger data privacy and security controls to meet healthcare compliance standards\
  • Support for additional messaging platforms beyond WhatsApp\
  • Pilot deployments with small clinics to measure real-world impact and reduce no-show rates

Ultimately, we aim to make MedAssist a lightweight, scalable tool that improves access to healthcare while reducing administrative burden for clinics worldwide.
