Inspiration
In healthcare, effective communication is essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment. However, patients often describe their symptoms in their own words, which may not directly match medical terminology. This language barrier can lead to misunderstandings and delays in diagnosis. Our goal was to bridge this gap by creating a tool that translates patient-reported symptoms into probable medical conditions, empowering healthcare providers with quick, data-driven insights. Inspired by the potential to improve diagnostic accuracy and make healthcare more accessible, we aimed to build a solution that leverages cutting-edge technology for smarter healthcare.
What it does
HealthScope is a diagnostic tool designed to interpret patient symptoms and suggest possible medical conditions. Patients input their symptoms in natural language, using their own words and descriptions. HealthScope then utilizes InterSystem’s IRIS data platform to analyze the input and its semantics, cross-referencing it with a vast repository of medical knowledge. The system identifies and ranks the five most probable medical conditions based on the symptoms provided. This quick, data-backed insight can aid healthcare professionals in making informed diagnostic decisions and streamline the patient’s journey from symptom reporting to diagnosis.
How we built it
We used InterSystem’s IRIS to store and process large amounts of medical data. IRIS provides advanced data management and analytics capabilities, making it an ideal choice for managing complex healthcare information. The interface allows patients to enter symptoms and view probable conditions. The design is focused on simplicity and usability, ensuring patients can easily engage with HealthScope.
Challenges we ran into
We faced a lot of problems while setting up the IRIS and the system.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
setting up getting top 5 medical conditions purely on semantics
What we learned
learning about semantic text comparison and relation using vectorization and making use of docker containers
What's next for Healthscope
Using web scraping to provide links with our outputs to have more detailed information of the medical condition and also plan for a mobile app for easy on-the-go usage
