Inspiration

With this world, I was keen to make something that could get someone up and running on something very "different", without being too prescriptive on what they had to do with it. Which is why I decided to focus on a "controller" more than anything else.
Also, with the recent focus on mobile, and the new gesture API, this felt like a good place to start.

What it does

The controller uses gestures to control a first person "mech", to avoid the need to any interactive HUD. Swipe forwards/backwards to move the throttle up/down. Swipe left/right to rotate the cabin by a set amount. Tapping the screen will fire a missile (if there are any left!)

How we built it

The player is forced into FocusedInteractionMode to ensure the standard camera/joystick controls are not used. The majority of the "magic" comes from the animation of the HUD, which is largely sin curves linked to the movement rate of the player.

What's next for Mech Controller : Remix World

Ways to remix this world!

Theme:

Swapping out the cockpit texture can very quickly change the feel of the controller. Why not consider some popular "mechs" from other media!

  • Space Marine Dreadnought
  • Power Rangers MegaZord
  • Those APUs for defending Zion in the third Matrix film

Gameplay:

The remix world is intentionally lax on game loop, leaving it up to the creator to figure out what they want to do with the mechs, but some fun ideas could be:

  • Horde mode waves
  • Tower defence
  • Clearing out pre-defined levels - time challenges

Multiplayer:

  • Launch drills at other platform, while clearing your own
  • Pick up supply drops and bringing them back to your base
