MealShare

The inspiration for MealShare came from a simple problem: hunger. One of the UN’s 17 sustainable goals. Many households and restaurants often have excess food that goes uneaten, while others in the community struggle with food insecurity. Our goal was to create an easy-to-use platform where people could list, request, and share meals, fostering a culture of sustainability and generosity.

As with the hackathon, our journey was not without its obstacles. Some of the major challenges we encountered included technical difficulties with images, coding setbacks, and time constraints. We used Figma to design the MealShare app but encountered unexpected issues with image layering and positioning. As we worked on creating a UI, overlapping elements caused errors, making it difficult to create an appealing design. Additionally, exporting assets led to inconsistent image rendering, which affected our ability to present our ideas. Despite there being issues we continued to work by changing our layout. Initially, we aimed to develop a fully functional app, but debugging and integration took longer than expected. Our system and database lead to unexpected roadblocks, forcing us to pivot towards making a wireframe for our app instead of a fully functional one. With only a few hours to bring our idea to life, we struggled to balance brainstorming, designing, and coding. While we couldn't get every feature working as planned, we successfully created wireframes and a roadmap for future development.

Despite these challenges, the hackathon was an incredibly rewarding experience. We learned how to successfully work as a team and generate productive ideas, as well as learning about the rigorous process to turn visions into reality. For example, we learned to wireframe our ideas to ensure the smooth development of our idea.

Participating in this hackathon was a wonderful experience that pushed us to think creatively and work under pressure. While MealShare is not fully functional yet, the event laid the groundwork for a meaningful project that could make a difference. We are excited to continue refining our idea and turning MealShare into a platform that helps communities reduce food waste while supporting those in need.
