About MealReach
Inspiration
Food wastage and hunger are two problems that often exist side by side. Restaurants, hotels, events, and other establishments may have surplus food at the end of the day, while orphanages, old-age homes, homeless shelters, and community kitchens may need food resources.
We believe that perfectly usable surplus food should have a better destination than being wasted. This inspired us to come up with MealReach, a platform that aims to connect food donors with organisations and communities that can make use of these resources.
What It Does
MealReach aims to make food redistribution easier by connecting people who have surplus food with those who need it.
The platform is planned to include:
- Food Donations: Restaurants, hotels, event organisers, and other donors can list their surplus food along with its quantity, type, location, and collection deadline.
- Recipient Organisations: Orphanages, old-age homes, shelters, community kitchens, and other eligible organisations can browse available donations.
- Smart Matching: A matching system will recommend suitable recipients based on location, food quantity, requirements, and collection time.
- Food Requirements: Recipient organisations can post their requirements so donors can find out where their surplus food is needed.
- Donation Tracking: Users will be able to track donation requests and their collection status.
How We Plan to Build It
We plan to develop MealReach as a web-based platform with separate interfaces for food donors and recipient organisations.
The frontend will provide a simple and accessible user experience, while the backend will handle user accounts, food listings, donation requests, and matching logic. A database will store the relevant information and help manage donation statuses.
We aim to use technologies such as Python, Flask, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and SQLite, depending on the final implementation.
Our priority will be to develop a functional prototype that demonstrates the complete process, from listing surplus food to matching it with a suitable recipient.
What We Hope to Learn
Through this project, we hope to gain practical experience in:
- Building a full-stack web application.
- Connecting frontend and backend systems.
- Working with databases and APIs.
- Developing a basic intelligent matching algorithm.
- Collaborating as a team under a limited timeframe.
- Applying technology to solve a real-world problem.
Challenges We Anticipate
As a team participating in a 24-hour hackathon, we expect several challenges along the way.
- Designing a matching system that considers multiple factors such as distance, quantity, and collection deadlines.
- Managing different types of donors and recipient organisations.
- Ensuring that the application remains simple and easy to use.
- Integrating different parts of the application within the available time.
- Prioritising essential features while working under a tight deadline.
We plan to address these challenges by dividing responsibilities among team members and focusing on the core functionality before introducing additional features.
Future Scope
We envision MealReach growing into a platform that makes surplus food redistribution more organised and accessible.
In the future, we hope to introduce verified organisation profiles, improved location-based matching, real-time notifications, donation history, and impact tracking.
Our long-term goal is to help reduce avoidable food wastage while making it easier for surplus food to reach communities that need it.
