Inspiration

MealPlan365 is inspired by the weekly challenge of juggling recipes, meal plans, grocery lists, and cooking. We wanted our app to streamline these common weekly activities.

What it does

MealPlan365 is:

  1. A Recipe Library (including import from AI via text/photo).
  2. A Meal Planner (from recipes)
  3. A Smart Grocery List (from meals)
  4. A Step-byStep Cooking Guide

How we built it

React Native + Expo, TypeScript, SQLite (expo-sqlite), AWS Amplify back end with openai gpt5 integration for recipe generation.

Challenges we ran into

  • Building the app as “local-first” made adding cross-platform sync both complex and rewarding.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Fully offline-capable with local-first performance.
  • Support for 14 languages from day 1.

What we learned

  • From customers: what they value most in a meal planning and cooking app.
  • How to securely integrate OpenAI into backend services.
  • Best practices for supporting multiple languages and locales.

What's next for Mealplan365

  • LISTEN to customer feedback, focus on that
  • Deeper focus on assisting with "what to cook this week" and "what to cook from my ingredients"
  • Capability to improve Recipe with AI
  • Intelligent meal planning with criteria (like alternates proteins) or maybe even just a “spin the wheel” or "slot machine" style meal chooser!
  • Shared recipe libraries with friends and family.
  • Shared grocery lists for the whole household.
  • iOS watch app
