Inspiration
We were inspired by the common issue people face when meeting up with friends and being indecisive on where to eat. We often spend too much time asking “well where do you want to eat?” back and forth. Therefore, we wanted to make an interactive app where deciding where to eat became fun, as well as incentivize people to care for themselves by eating with friends and stop meal skipping that college culture often normalizes.
What it does
With this app, we are connecting with available friends based on their schedules and making sure we are healthy by eating with each other at a common place! In a way, mealpal is helping stop the normalization of meal skipping within college culture.
Challenges we ran into
One of the major challenges we faced was setting up the environment to use React Native on our computers - we had problems regarding version compatibility and storage space.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Being new to the world of React Native, we believe that we did a great job in the limited time we had. We picked up skills and implemented them on our project quickly while going an extra mile to polish our work.
What's next for MealPal
We would like to include more features in our app such as recording the calorie intake of our user in order to tailor our suggestions to promote a balanced diet and healthy eating options. Furthermore, we would like to widen our suggestions to restaurants in LA instead of just dining halls.
