Inspiration

As students, we all have busy class schedules, and sometimes its difficult to squeeze meals in between classes. Sometimes, when we aren't sure if we will be able to make it, we go to class without eating. We were inspired by having to run to classes without food because we were scared of not making it to class on time.

About the project

MealFinder will use a students current location, schedule, and dietary information to find a restaurant close enough that the student can make it in time for their next class.

How we built it

We used React for our frontend, and Flask (python) for our backend. For our restaurant recommendation logic, we attempted to integrate a gemini endpoint.

Challenges we ran into

When running npm install, Windows Defender was silently blocking somethings from being installed, leading to a very confusing issue where we were unable to connect to our localhost.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of learning React as we were not that familiar with the programming language. Some members have never used React and Flask, so this project helped develop our skills and learn a new programming language.

What we learned

Before this hackathon, we were quite inexperienced with web development as whole, so this experience gave us all some much needed practice.

What's next for MealFinder

We hope to integrate more features and to make the website something that students would be able to use to get food on campus.
