Inspiration
As the cost of living continues to soar in urban centers such as San Francisco, more and more city dwellers are forced to budget ever more tightly to make it to the next paycheck. Available food options within city environments tend to be priced much higher than in their suburban and rural counterparts. Normally, the most affordable options for food lie in food banks, restaurants, and supermarkets. Nearly 3/4ths of all food unsold at these locations end up in dumpsters or compost piles. We want to provide a way to make the search for more affordable food options easier by directing them to these services normally reserved for no to low-income persons, while also increasing traffic for these locations so that less food can be wasted in the long run.
What it does
It uses the TOMTOM API's POI to show the locations, specifically food banks, supermarkets, and restuarants that are offering away their excess food.
How we built it
We used the React framework for web as well as Swift IOS for the mobile version.
Challenges we ran into
The setState on the React framework was giving us difficulty.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are happy that we got the Maps tiles working on the IOS as well as React. On React we were also able to use Point of Interests.
What we learned
How to use the TOMTOM API and integrate it into the Swift and React frameworks.
What's next for Meal Tickit
We will continue to refine and add more of the TomTom features onto both the web and mobile versions of the app. Once finished, we'll launch it to the App Store.
