Meal Mates: Project Story

Inspiration

The rising issue of food insecurity inspired us to create Meal Mates. We were driven by the desire to ensure that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, has access to nutritious and delicious meals. Seeing how food insecurity affects physical health, concentration, and well-being motivated us to take action by creating a sustainable and community-driven solution.

What it does

Meal Mates provides access to free meals by partnering with local food vendors and leveraging community resources. We aim to eliminate the burden of meal costs, allowing people to enjoy their favorite dishes without worrying about finances. Our platform connects those in need with nearby food vendors, ensuring easy access to healthy meals.

How we built it

Meal Mates was developed using a combination of React for the front-end, Node.js and Express for the back-end, and MongoDB for database management. We integrated an API to connect with local food vendors and allow real-time tracking of meal distribution. The platform's design is centered around user-friendliness and accessibility to ensure that it serves a wide audience.

Challenges we ran into

One of the major challenges was finding a sustainable model that allows continuous collaboration with food vendors while ensuring no cost to users. Another challenge was designing an intuitive user interface that caters to both vendors and meal recipients. Additionally, integrating real-time updates on available meals and vendor partnerships required intricate back-end logic and data synchronization.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of successfully building a platform that addresses a pressing social issue and provides an impactful solution. Securing partnerships with local food vendors and seeing the positive feedback from the community has been incredibly rewarding. The scalability of Meal Mates also excites us, as it has the potential to grow and reach even more people in need.

What we learned

We learned how to collaborate effectively as a team, especially when it comes to balancing the technical aspects of building a platform with the social impact we aim to achieve. This project deepened our understanding of full-stack development and the complexities of integrating APIs and real-time data management. Most importantly, we learned the power of community-driven solutions to tackle large-scale problems like hunger.

What's next for Meal Mates

We plan to expand Meal Mates by partnering with more food vendors and local organizations. Additionally, we aim to integrate a donation feature to allow community members to contribute towards sustaining the program. In the future, we hope to introduce a mobile app for even greater accessibility and explore options for scaling the project to other cities facing food insecurity.
