Inspiration
Students always have limited choices for affordable food options because of the rising inflations. Students normally find it hard to find a time to cook based on their limited heavy course loads. That’s why we are gathering all food places near the McGill downtown campus for students both saving their time and helping the issue with food insecurity.
What it does
This project gathers all affordable places for students near the McGill downtown campus. My team is aiming to provide the most valuable affordable food resources through a website linked with thorough restaurant information which students can easily access and decide their own food choices.
How we built it
After we decided our target community audiences which are McGill student community, we started to do some research on affordable restaurants options around the McGill downtown campus. We found some free web templates as online resources that would better serve our ideas to reality. We tailored one of the templates using HTML, CSS, Javascript, Google map API and PlaceID.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges is based on our limited coding and web development experiences. It's hard for us to set up and figure out the solutions for our project at first. We had difficulties in tailoring the web templates to better serve the McGill students community. We made efforts on figuring out different codes from the web templates first and then searched through online resources constantly to write customised codes and embed those codes.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
As beginners to web development, this is the first website that we created. We learned to build a project from drafting the outline, defining each person’s responsibilities, working on our own parts, merging our own parts together and finally successfully tested our website. We’re proud of using Google API and placeID for the first time and embedding Google Map on our website. This experience is valuable which provided us with reading the error messages and figuring out the debugging process on our own.
What we learned
We never used the API and PlaceID as a part of our project before. We have to search and learn from extra online resources even asking for help through the mentor provided by the CodeJam community. When we were trying to figure out the debugging process, another new challenge came which is we have to have a thoughtful overview of each part of our code. We also learned that patience and team collaboration are the keys for our project and at the end we figured things out and understood each other better.
What's next for McGill Affordable Food Cheatsheet
We are aiming to ask students food choices suggestions and we are open to any voices from the McGill community. We could design affordable prices around campus apps not only for food but other services as well to better serve the student community. Due to time constraints, we were unable to explore all the affordable restaurants near McGill. However, we are eager to expand and enhance our cheat sheet by adding more restaurants. Our future plans may even include expanding our coverage to encompass the entirety of Montreal. Stay tuned for updates!
