Inspiration

Living in a student apartment with no digital system for rent reminders, issue reporting, or communication made management feel chaotic. I wanted to build something that could simplify life for both tenants and landlords. This inspired the creation of MB Apartments Management System — a tool that turns every tenant's phone into a virtual front desk.

What it does

MB Apartments Management System is a web-based platform that allows tenants to:

Log in securely and view their lease status.

Track days remaining in their lease.

Check their rent payment status.

Submit suggestions and report issues easily. For admins, the system provides tools to:

Manage tenant data.

View and respond to reported issues.

Monitor rent payment records.

View lease expiries and communication history.

How we built it

We used HTML, CSS, Bootstrap for the frontend and integrated it with Node.js and Express for the backend. MongoDB was used for the database to store tenant, admin, and issue data. Authentication is managed through JWT, and role-based access control ensures only the right users see the right features. We used local Storage for quick prototyping and plan to upgrade it to session/token-based persistence.

Challenges we ran into

Designing a clean, mobile-friendly UI while keeping all functionality visible.

Implementing role-based access control with separate views for tenants and admins.

Handling date calculations for lease countdown timers in a dynamic, user-specific way.

Debugging deployment issues due to environment variable mismatches.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Functional dashboard with real-time lease countdown.

Smooth login with data persistence and redirection.

Forms for issue/suggestion reporting that save data efficiently.

Admin dashboard with tenant status tracking.

What's next for MB Apartments Management System

Add email/SMS reminders for rent due and lease expiries.

Enable file uploads (e.g., for photos of maintenance issues).

Provide a landlord dashboard with rent analytics.

Implement mobile responsiveness and PWA support.

Deploy the full system on Render or Vercel with a public link.
