What it does🌐 Maya — Reimagining Social Connection
✨ Inspiration
Maya was born out of frustration… but also vision.
Modern social media feels loud, addictive, and disconnected from real meaning. Algorithms push division, attention is commodified, and authentic connection gets buried under trends and noise. I wanted to build something different—a space where people could reconnect with themselves, their roots, and each other.
Maya is inspired by the idea that digital spaces should uplift, not drain. It’s about community, identity, and intentional interaction—not just scrolling.
🧠 What I Learned
Building Maya taught me way more than just code.
Real-time systems are complex — handling livestreams, comments, and interactions without lag pushed me to deeply understand event-driven architecture. User experience is everything — even small UI bugs (like disappearing listeners or broken previews) can break trust instantly. Backend structure matters early — using tools like Supabase and Firebase showed me how important scalability and security are from the start. Debugging is a mindset — most of the journey was problem-solving, patience, and learning how to trace issues step by step. 🛠️ How I Built It
Maya is built as a modern, scalable social platform with a focus on real-time interaction:
Frontend: React / React Native Backend: Supabase (database, auth, real-time subscriptions) Hosting & Deployment: Firebase Hosting Core Features: 📡 Livestreams with multi-guest support (host + speakers + listeners) 💬 Real-time comments and interactions 🧑🤝🧑 Community-driven spaces (“Pow Wows”) 🎥 Media sharing (posts, images) 🎭 Virtual backgrounds & camera features
A lot of the architecture revolves around real-time data flow:
User Action → Database Event → Subscription Update → UI Re-render User Action→Database Event→Subscription Update→UI Re-render
This pipeline ensures users see updates instantly, creating a live, immersive experience.
⚔️ Challenges I Faced
This wasn’t smooth—and that’s what made it powerful.
Livestream issues: Guests getting stuck loading, audio/video not syncing, and panel views not updating correctly. UI/UX bugs: Elements disappearing (like raised hands), inconsistent timelines, and broken previews. Media handling: Background images and green screen effects not rendering correctly across devices. Real-time consistency: Preventing duplicate posts and ensuring feeds stayed stable under live updates.
Each challenge forced me to slow down, rethink the system, and rebuild parts of it stronger.
🌱 What Maya Represents
Maya isn’t just an app—it’s a shift in intention.
It’s about:
Moving from consumption → connection From algorithms → community From noise → meaning
This is just the beginning, but the foundation is there.
And honestly… building Maya changed how I see technology. Not just as a tool—but as a space we can shape with purpose.
