Inspiration
Most AI assistants are designed as tools: you open them, ask something, get an answer, and leave.
We wanted to build something different — an AI companion that feels more personal and interactive. The idea behind MAXie came from the simplicity of virtual pets combined with modern AI: instead of just watching an animated character, users can interact with a companion that remembers interactions, develops personality, reacts to them, and grows over time.
Our goal was to make AI feel less like another app and more like a companion that users enjoy coming back to.
What it does
MAXie is an AI-powered interactive companion for mobile, with a companion experience designed around personality, memory, emotions, and interaction.
Users can:
💬 Interact with MAXie through AI conversations 🧠 Build persistent memories and interaction history ❤️ Develop a friendship/XP relationship with MAXie 🎭 Experience different moods, reactions, and expressions 🐾 Interact with MAXie as a virtual companion 🎁 Unlock interactions and rewards 📱 Use MAXie through a dedicated mobile experience 💎 Access premium functionality through our monetization system
The project also includes a desktop version, while the mobile experience is our Shipaton Next Gen submission.
How we built it
MAXie was built as an open-source project with a Flutter-based mobile application and a separate desktop implementation.
The mobile experience uses Flutter for the cross-platform application layer, while MAXie's companion systems handle interaction, personality, memory, moods, and progression.
We also integrated RevenueCat to handle the monetization layer and premium entitlements.
The project is structured as an open-source GitHub repository so developers can explore the implementation, understand how the different systems work, and contribute to the project.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was making MAXie feel like a companion rather than a normal chatbot.
We had to think about how memory, personality, emotions, progression, and interactions could work together without making the experience complicated.
We also faced the usual challenges of mobile development: managing application state, keeping animations and interactions smooth, handling different device configurations, and making sure the companion remained reliable during repeated interactions.
Another challenge was integrating monetization without making the core experience feel unnecessarily restricted. We wanted MAXie to remain useful as a free experience while providing a clear path for premium features.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that MAXie evolved from a simple virtual-pet concept into a much broader AI companion system.
Some things we're particularly proud of:
🧠 Building a memory-driven companion experience ❤️ Creating a friendship and XP progression system 🎭 Implementing moods, reactions, and personality 📱 Turning the concept into a working mobile application 🖥️ Building both mobile and desktop experiences 💰 Integrating RevenueCat for monetization 🌐 Making the project open source 🚀 Shipping MAXie as a real project rather than leaving it as a prototype
Most importantly, MAXie is something we can continue developing after the hackathon.
What we learned
We learned that building an AI product is much more than connecting an AI model to a chat interface.
The experience around the model matters just as much: memory, personality, interaction design, feedback, progression, and user motivation all influence how people perceive an AI companion.
We also learned a lot about designing mobile experiences, managing application state, integrating monetization, debugging across platforms, and turning an evolving project into something that can actually be shipped.
Most importantly, we learned to focus on the user's experience rather than simply adding more technology.
What's next for MAXie — AI Companion
MAXie is only the beginning.
Next, we want to expand MAXie's personality and memory systems, introduce richer interactions and mini-games, improve personalization, and create deeper connections between the mobile and desktop experiences.
We also want to explore better AI models, stronger privacy controls, cloud synchronization, more customization options, and a larger ecosystem of characters and experiences.
Our long-term vision is to make MAXie an AI companion that grows with the user instead of simply responding to the user.
