Inspiration

Coming from the music and art scenes, we recognize the significant gap in Web3 adoption in the Middle East and North Africa due to legal barriers and limited educational opportunities. Additionally, there is a huge need for a fair economic system and greater freedom of expression for independent music. Therefore, we initiated Mawjat to strive to overcome these barriers by offering platforms and educational activities for artists and musicians in the region, fostering independent music, and providing a space for freedom of expression.

What it does

Mawjat is a decentralized music streaming platform that serves musicians from the Middle East, North Africa, and Diaspora. The platform concentrates on independent, alternative music, offering a qualitative and experimental space.

Mawjat is a female-led project based in Berlin and focuses on fostering a collaborative and culturally rich independent music ecosystem.

How we built it

The initiative started in 2022 supported by Cultural Resource Organization with the purpose of tracking technological advancements and analyses related to Web3 and blockchain technology.

We realized that our initiative needs a fostering community to maximize the impact. Therefore, we dedicated a year to in-depth market research, engaging musicians and enthusiasts, and organizing meetups, artist labs, and the first version of Mawj Festival in Berlin; the hub of the international music scene.

Our outreach efforts successfully onboarded musicians from the Middle East and North Africa eager to embrace Web3, creating a supportive and open community.

We've also established key partnerships to boost our mission:

  • The Taxir Initiative in Lebanon, focusing on artists' web3 education and adoption in the MENA region.
  • Dar Blockchain in Tunisia, collaborating on the platform tech development.
  • The TAK Theater in Berlin, hosting music activities associated with Mawjat.
  • Studio L'Shabab in Berlin, a collective of musicians from the Middle East, North Africa and beyond.
  • The Cultural Resource Organization, which supported the whole research phase. -Blue Dar Production, a digital art production based in Berlin.

Challenges we ran into

During our research process, we conducted meetings and surveys with musicians from the MENA & North Africa to identify the economic and digital challenges they face. We also reviewed and studied various Arab and global tech initiatives in the blockchain and Web3 fields, specifically in music. Additionally, we explored regulations and policies concerning these technologies in the MENA region.

Through this research, we found several key points, some of which:

  • The practical difficulty of applying Web3 systems in the music and cultural fields in the MENA region without fostering a supportive community that understands these technologies.
  • Lack of sufficient and accessible information about Web3 and blockchain technology in the independent music scene.
  • The scarcity of Arab initiatives fostering blockchain technology.
  • Lack of legal framework for blockchain projects in the region (ex: DAOs).
  • Security and privacy concerns.

We realized the importance of launching Mawjat Lab alongside the music streaming platform. The lab aims to empower musicians and cultural actors in the MENA region, enabling them to comprehend the potential of Web3 and blockchain while forming their own perspectives. Moreover, it provides equal and equitable technological education opportunities for all, by creating a fostering community around our initiative (potential users).

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our key achievements include:

  • Publishing two research papers with the support of the Cultural Resource Organization: "Web3 Adoption in the MENA Region," and "Case Studies and Landscape Analysis," through market research, interviews, and surveys with musicians and Web3 enthusiasts; offering a comprehensive overview of the current state of music and technology in the region.

  • Launched Mawjat Artists Lab in Berlin, an event series designed to nurture dialogue, education, and collaboration among creatives. Our first Lab welcomed 30 musicians and Web3 enthusiasts from the MENA region.

  • Successfully hosted the first edition of the annual Mawj Music Festival in Berlin in September 2023, featuring 7 music acts (musicians and bands) from the MENA and an audience of 300.

What we learned

From our journey with Mawjat, we've gained invaluable insights:

  • Community fostering is essential for growth and sustainability of the platform.
  • There's a significant demand for a platform that focuses on alternative and independent music from the MENA region, as there's no such initiatives for musicians and listens as fans of this type of music.
  • Forming partnerships with regional organizations is crucial for accelerated growth and maximizing impact.
  • Education and awareness about Web3 are an essential key to adoption, especially destigmatize the web3 space from the get rich quickly aspect and the lack of information about its cultural impact.
  • A region-specific financial business model is key to sustainability and relevance.
  • The necessity for an affordable on-chain decentralized storage solutions has become apparent to handle data efficiently.
  • Dynamic NFTs offer a range of creativity with endless possibilities, proving to be much more than digital collectibles.

What's next for Mawjat

  • Expand Our Community: Initiate events such as the "Mawjat Music Festival 2024" and "Artists Lab" to engage and grow our community.

  • Educational Podcasts: Launch a series of bilingual podcasts in both Arabic and English to showcase cultural applications of Web3 technology.

  • Prototype Refinement: Continue refining and improving our platform's prototype for enhanced user experience.

-Seek Strategic Investment: Actively search for strategic investments to support the growth and development of Mawjat.
