Inspiration

MauzoPlus was inspired by the everyday reality of small businesses across Africa that still rely on notebooks, guesswork, and disconnected tools to run their operations. This lack of visibility often leads to lost revenue, poor inventory management, and difficulty tracking customer debts. Having worked closely with businesses and built real-world systems, we saw a clear opportunity to create a solution tailored to these challenges.

What it does

MauzoPlus is an all-in-one business management platform that helps businesses track sales, manage inventory, monitor customer debts, and accept payments seamlessly with M-Pesa and other methods. It also provides real-time analytics and AI-powered insights, enabling business owners to make smarter decisions and scale efficiently.

How we built it

We built MauzoPlus using a modern full-stack architecture with React and Next.js for the frontend, and Laravel and Django powering the backend APIs. PostgreSQL is used for data management, and the system integrates with M-Pesa for payments. We also implemented an offline-first approach using progressive web technologies to ensure the platform works reliably even with limited internet connectivity.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was implementing a reliable offline-first system while maintaining data consistency across devices. Integrating M-Pesa payments and automating reconciliation also required careful handling. Additionally, designing a simple and intuitive experience for non-technical users took multiple iterations and user feedback.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully built a fully functional platform that is already being used by 500+ businesses across East Africa. We created a system that replaces multiple tools with one unified platform and supports businesses from small shops to multi-branch enterprises. We’re also proud of building a solution that truly fits the African market.

What we learned

We learned that simplicity and reliability are more important than complexity, especially for small businesses. We also discovered how critical real-time data and automation are in helping businesses grow. Most importantly, we learned the value of building with the user in mind and continuously improving based on feedback.

What's next for MauzoPlus

Our next focus is scaling adoption across East Africa, launching monetization, and expanding AI capabilities to deliver more advanced insights and automation. We also plan to introduce financial services such as business wallets and credit solutions, positioning MauzoPlus as the financial operating system for SMEs in emerging markets.
