Inspiration
The inspiration of mAthRmatics was to tackle what us three see as a challenge in current online education: The challenge of maintaining an engaging experience in online education. With an ever growing reliance on technology, as well as the advancements in the AR/VR field, it was immediately obvious to us that we wanted to utilize AR technology to help us achieve this vision.
With the lack of a classroom presence and even less engaging material for students to utilize, the online education experience has been rough on everyone currently in school, most especially the younger students, where school not only facilitated a dedicated space for education, but socialization as well.
What it does
mAthRmatics is a flashcard system designed around integrating augmented reality into STEM education. Through combining a flash card system, and with the limitless possibilities of AR -- we want to combine the best parts of what values we believe learning should always try to incorporate: an engaging, exciting way to learn, while using a proven system of spaced repetition to retain the information learned as well.
How we built it
As the three of us are relatively new to all of this, we decided to use echoAR as a foundation. By using SketchUp, we created the 3D models for our numbers and imported them into echoAR. Since echoAR comes ready to use immediately code, it was the obvious choice for us to base our project around echoAR.
Challenges we ran into
It took us some time to learn the echoAR platform, as we spent many hours troubleshooting. Our biggest challenge was getting the image tracking for our 3D models to project from.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Overall, we learned a lot and are proud of ourselves for persevering and taking the initiative to tackle a problem despite our experience. We were able to put our mind to something and have our passion carry us throughout this hackathon.
What we learned
We switched between many ideas during the initial planning phase of the Hackathon. However, we came to the mutual conclusion that online education was the issue we wanted to handle. We quickly discovered that AR and VR technology has many potential connections to education and STEM fields. With these connections in place, we knew that it was an absolutely great way to implement interactive learning experiences.
What's next for mAthRmatics
As we currently see mAthRmatics, it is definitely a project we most definitely will like to continue with, given more time and experience to integrate echoAR as a backend for what we choose to do with our approach in Unity/C#.
