Inspiration

As math students, we noticed that using generic AI chatbots like ChatGPT for math problems is frustrating: answers skip steps, formulas are messy, and you have to manually copy functions to another website just to see a graph. We built MathMentor AI to fix this.

What it does

MathMentor AI is a dedicated math tutoring web app that:

  • Takes any algebra, calculus, or trigonometry problem as input
  • Generates clear, step-by-step solutions with LaTeX formatted formulas
  • Automatically visualizes functions with interactive Matplotlib graphs
  • Includes a Hint Mode that only gives guiding questions, so students don't just copy answers

How we built it

We used Python with Streamlit for the web interface, Groq's open-source LLM API for AI responses, and Matplotlib for automatic function plotting.

Challenges we ran into

  • Parsing function expressions from AI responses reliably
  • Converting math notation (^ for exponents) to Python-compatible syntax
  • Making sure the AI always outputs teaching-style explanations instead of just final answers

What's next

  • OCR support for handwritten math problems
  • Personalized problem history and error tracking
  • Multi-variable calculus and linear algebra support
