Inspiration

Most of us have younger siblings and have seen them constantly complain about working through math problems on platforms like IXL. After taking a look, we saw that there was no fun. Kids simply just answered questions and moved on. Our plan to incorporate fun into studying starts with Math Racers (which is currently geared towards younger kids).

What it does

Math Racers is a game that randomly generates simple problems for young students just learning math. It makes it extremely fun as it allows the player to race a car against a bot while they answer questions. The players are incentivized to do well as they move faster and further for answering quickly.

How we built it

We implemented this game on a website. The formatting (look and feel) was created using HTML and CSS. All the logic (timer, bot, generating questions, submitting answers) was developed with JS.

Challenges we ran into

We had issues with implementing the timer and ensuring that it reset. For example, the timer would not reset and only start after the first problem. Additionally, there was loophole that allowed players to submit an answer multiple times (even after getting it wrong) and we struggled a lot to fix this.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of implementing the bot, it was something that took a lot of time because there was so much that could go wrong.

What we learned

We learned that splitting up the work isn't very efficient at the very beginning. With multiple people working on different things, people would accidently change something that someone else was working on. This issue is something that we will keep in mind for future projects.

What's next for Math Racers

We plan to improve Math Racers to allow for multiplayer game modes. Additionally, we plan to expand our audience by including other subjects such as science, history, and English.
