In the age of technology, children today are fortunate to be exposed to a wide variety of tools, including laptops, mobile phones, and tablets. All of these encompass applications and websites that strive to get these children to learn. However, most of them tend to lean heavily towards academic learning, which we all know children are not the most passionate about. Compared to these lengthy and unexciting apps, high-intensity games and watching YouTube are much more appealing to them.

Which is why we created “Math-O-Lantern.” An application that combines education and entertainment. A fun, simple, and educational game that children can charge their brains, and have fun at the same time!

“Math-O-Lantern” is a simple game where you play as a magical pumpkin that shoots flames at ghosts. Once the flames touch the ghosts, they poof. However, if a ghost touches you, the universe will give you another chance in the form of a math question. If you answer it correctly, you revive and continue your crusade. If you get it wrong or the timer ends, you lose a life. Once all three lives are lost, you are gone forever.

With “Math-O-Lantern,” children can have fun and learn at the same time. The next time they are staring at a screen, they will not be just spacing out. They will be lighting their candles and ready to exterminate otherworldly spirits. At the same time, they will be learning what 7 * 3 is!

The game is made using C++; both the engine and the game-play loop are made with C++ and SDL2. SDL2 is a cross-platform development library designed to provide low-level access to various hardware components. It offers a standardized API. It is used to create the window and render PNG images for the game.
