Inspiration

Math learning can sometimes feel repetitive and challenging for middle school students. Many students struggle with concepts like fractions, decimals, and algebra because traditional practice methods often lack engagement and motivation. I was inspired by the progression systems of puzzle games and wanted to create a learning experience where solving math problems feels rewarding. This idea led to Math Crush, a platform that turns math practice into a level-based game experience.

What it does

Math Crush is a gamified math learning platform designed for Grade 6–8 students. Students progress through a Candy Crush-style level map where they solve math questions, earn points, collect stars, and unlock new levels based on their performance. The platform includes:

  • Level-based math challenges
  • Multiple-choice questions with instant feedback
  • Star rating system based on accuracy
  • Progress tracking
  • Student leaderboard
  • Secure login and saved statistics

How I built it

I built Math Crush as a full-stack web application. Frontend:

  • React with TypeScript and Vite
  • Tailwind CSS for the game-inspired interface
  • Framer Motion for animations and smooth interactions Backend:
  • Node.js and Express.js
  • JWT authentication
  • bcrypt for secure password hashing Database:
  • PostgreSQL database design for users, levels, questions, and progress
  • SQLite support for easy local development and testing

Challenges I ran into

The biggest challenges were creating a smooth game-like learning experience while keeping the application simple and scalable. I worked on:

  • Building the level unlocking and progression system
  • Managing user scores and progress
  • Creating responsive animations
  • Designing a database structure that supports future expansion

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I built a complete interactive learning platform with:

  • 50+ middle school math questions covering fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, algebra, and geometry
  • A Candy Crush-inspired level progression system
  • Star-based scoring and rewards
  • Interactive question gameplay with feedback
  • User authentication and progress tracking
  • A polished game-style interface

What I learned

While building Math Crush, I learned how game mechanics can make educational experiences more engaging. I also improved my skills in:

  • Full-stack web development
  • Designing interactive user experiences
  • Creating gamification systems
  • Building scalable application structures

What's next for Math Crush

I plan to expand Math Crush with:

  • Teacher dashboards for managing classes and assignments
  • More math topics and difficulty levels
  • Multiplayer math challenges
  • Additional game mechanics and rewards
  • More personalized learning features
