Inspiration The system to find opportunities and events to boost your portfolio is very fragmented and not centralized, causing students to miss out on opportunities and forget deadlines. With more competitions attended and more prizes won, you stand out from the standard applicant pool and show a genuine interest in the talent area, making you a top pick for job opportunities and increasing your chances while boosting your portfolio—all centralized and personalized.
What it does It acts as a centralized platform for students to upgrade their resume and portfolio, and it has a Tinder-style swipe left or right interface which makes the whole process fun and engaging. The opportunities which are swiped right on are added to your saved section, and you can add them to your timeline after registering for them. All based on your onboarding and information extract from your resume
How I built it I built MatchEd using React and Tailwind CSS for a fast, responsive user interface, with Lucide icons to keep the layout modern and interactive. For state management, we utilized browser local storage so user profiles, bookmarks, and swiped opportunities persist smoothly across sessions without needing a heavy backend database setup, as this is just the MVP. I also focused on custom component design, smooth card-stack animation logic, and modular file structures to keep the codebase clean.
Challenges we ran into I was planning to build a web scraper to automatically update the opportunities table in Supabase, but I wasn't able to do so in the given time as I had my final exams, so I just decided to use a mockup for this MVP. However, the real version would have a much more sophisticated database which would be updated daily, and the deadlines would also be updated accordingly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of The UI looks good, and I was finally able to get the code for the swiping right and was also able to find some opportunities and categorize them with the assistance of AI. I learned many new things, and I am going to keep working on this as I think it is a viable idea to take up.
What we learned I learnt user flows and researched many apps to see how they styled their user onboarding process, and I made it as quick and easy as possible for the users to sign up and start using the app.
What's next for MatchEd I am going to make the web scraper and get it to update the Supabase tables daily, improve the UI/UX, and I could partner with schools to get more students onboarded into this. Then it would attract organizations to list their events on here, and for the monetization plan, I could charge them for the number of people converted and signed up like a LinkedIn model, or I could position it as a SaaS operating on a freemium model.
