Inspiration

Long waits can be filled with anxiety, especially for kids, and we saw an opportunity to turn those moments into joyful memories. By connecting donors with surplus toys, games, and entertainment to hospitals, we aim to bridge the gap and create a meaningful impact for families, donors, and hospitals alike.

What it does

Match-A-Wish is a platform that uses AI-powered smart matching to connect donors with surplus inventory—like toys, entertainment, and other kid-friendly items—to children's hospitals. Hospitals can easily browse and request donations tailored to their needs, ensuring that no child has to wait in a hospital without something to bring a smile to their face. From donor pickup to hospital delivery, Match-A-Wish makes the process seamless and impactful.

How we built it

  • Matching Algorithm: A custom-built OpenAI-powered algorithm that prioritizes proximity, preference matching, and historical donation trends to find the best matches in real-time.
  • Authentication & Security: Authentication for secure donor and hospital user management.
  • Data Processing: Databricks for handling and analyzing donor inventory and hospital requests.
  • User Interface: A responsive and intuitive UI for both donors and hospitals, designed for ease of navigation and usability.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was building a matching algorithm that balances multiple factors like proximity, hospital preferences, and donation history. Additionally, ensuring real-time updates for inventory while maintaining a seamless user experience required significant optimization. Lastly, aligning donor contributions with hospital requests in an anonymized, scalable way posed unique logistical and technical hurdles.

Most importantly, we saw how small contributions, when matched effectively, can create a big impact on people's lives.
