Inspiration

In today's data-driven world, sharing information securely is crucial. Whether it's a company sharing internal reports or a government distributing documents, sensitive information must be protected. Current methods for redacting data are often manual and time-consuming. This inspired us to create MaskIT, a tool that automates the detection and redaction of sensitive information, ensuring data privacy and compliance without slowing down the workflow.

What it does

MaskIT is an intelligent redaction tool that identifies and redacts sensitive data from various file formats like text files, PDFs, CSVs, and even images. It automatically detects personal identifiers (like names, addresses, phone numbers) or confidential business details and removes them from the document, making it safe to share without risking the exposure of private information.

How we built it

We built MaskIT using machine learning models trained on natural language processing (NLP) techniques for text-based files, and computer vision for detecting sensitive data in images. We integrated libraries for handling multiple file formats (text, PDFs, CSVs, images), ensuring seamless redaction across different data types. The system is designed to scale and can be used through a user-friendly interface.

Challenges we ran into

One of the major challenges we faced was accurately detecting sensitive information in different contexts, especially when dealing with varied file formats. Another challenge was handling edge cases, like poorly scanned documents or detecting sensitive data in images with text overlays. Ensuring the redaction process preserved the format and usability of documents post-redaction was also a technical hurdle.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud of successfully developing a model that can handle multiple file types and formats while maintaining high accuracy in redacting sensitive information. Additionally, integrating both text and image processing into a single solution was a key milestone that added to MaskIT's versatility.

What we learned

Throughout the development of MaskIT, we learned a great deal about handling complex data structures, improving model accuracy, and designing user-friendly interfaces. We also gained deeper insights into the legal and ethical considerations surrounding data privacy, helping us ensure that MaskIT adheres to the highest data protection standards.

What's next for MaskIT

We plan to enhance MaskIT by integrating support for more file types, improving the detection accuracy of sensitive information in diverse languages, and adding advanced features like customizable redaction criteria based on user needs. In the long term, we aim to develop a cloud-based version of MaskIT, allowing organizations to seamlessly integrate it into their data workflows.
