Inspiration

The corona virus pandemic has affected millions of people globally and we can help mitigate the spread by the simple use of wearing a mask! There has been a big movement of people refusing to wear masks. We wanted to help come up with a solution that avoided that!

What it does

We wanted to create a door security camera that specifically told you whether or not someone at your door was wearing a face mask. If the camera did not detect the face mask, you will get a text message notification warning you not to open the door or to make sure to sanitize anything this person gives to you. You can also encourage the user to properly put their face mask on before they open the door

How I built it

I used Amazon Web Services for Image Recognition and the Raspberry Pi Camera for the demo

Challenges I ran into

I had a really hard time getting the code to run on the Raspberry Pi. I ended up having to use my own hotspot to enable the internet on the pi and it took a long time for me to figure out all the drivers. While I didn't get a finished product, I learned a lot from this challenge!

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I'm proud of what I did get done in such a short amount of time. I couldn't have gotten so much done without the help of my amazing WEHack mentor, Bishesh!

What I learned

I learned some basics of Amazon Web Services and Raspberry Pi setup.

What's next for Mask-ulinity

Next we could implement a speaker so that you can more clearly speak with the person outside the door before you open the door. We also want to develop a better algorithm for face detection in the future.
