DISCLAIMER
Sadly our project is unfinished, however we are still submitting anyways as a prototype and hope to come back to our project to finish it one day. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Inspiration
It is a sad reality that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, our communities haven't completely worked together to alleviate the threat. We still have individuals who don't wear or incorrectly wear their masks, for example. We wanted to use computer vision technology to help address this issue.
What it does
Our prototype can recognize a person's face, then determine if they have a mask/cloth that covers their nose, mouth, and chin.
How we built it
We used a Jupyter notebook to implement a machine learning model using TensorFlow and OpenCV.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into a problem of where to host the project. We tried google colab but unfortunately it was slow so we settled with the jupyter notebook extension on vscode instead.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Although unfinished, we're proud we at least got to implement the face detector feature.
What we learned
We got a chance to learn the different features and libraries that opencv and tensorflow had to offer.
What's next for Mask Detection with AI
We hope to come back one day to this project to finish it 100% and maybe add additional features like playing a sound/alarm if a person is detected with no mask.
