Inspiration
The name was inspired by one of my best friends who lives in Egypt, who has to really push and drive himself to succeed and inspire positive change, through his own willpower and with the help of the people he can trust.
Marwyn was also inspired by mental health crises I have seen in others, and experienced myself where we see the world around us as a dark, messed up place. While it can seem like that sometimes because of things outside of our control, there are always support tools that everyone can rely on.
What it does
- Marwyn is a text-based narrative game that deals with several important issues that I think need to be discussed in a mature and grounded way. It is a narrative adventure game that can be played on the web.
How I built it
I used Twine Harlowe as the Framework for my project; upon which I use JavaScript, CSS, and HTML logic as well as built-in Twine tools to construct the game itself.
Implemented a variety of AI tools such as Jasper for imagery, and AIVA for music.
Used my own creative writing to create a storyline based around mental health, going outside of your comfort zone, and dealing with a tough world through determination and your friendships.
Hex colors used were taken from Venngage's "Accessible color palette generator", to create an accessible and easy-to-read experience for everyone.
Challenges I ran into
Generating AI art using Jasper took a while due to how distinctive I wanted my art style to look.
Some of my JavaScript was finicky with Twine Harlowe, and I was unable to have the background music I created with AIVA to play while the game was running (at least on my end), if you'd like to listen to it while you play, go ahead: BackgroundMusic
I wish I had more time to write in even more choices and endings! Yet I am still very happy with where I am.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
- I'm honestly impressed that I was able to fit 5 different endings (a few extras with minor variations depending on your actions) into this game, all of them being based on the choices you've made throughout the game. This game is replayable: using different stats to unlock certain dialogue options and seeing which choices ultimately determine the varied endings you get.
What I learned
I've used Twine before but with very few "gameplay" elements. I learned a lot about how Variables in Twine are tracked (temporary or permanent), as well as how to format pages using buttons, images, different text colors, and fonts to create a replayable, and immersive experience.
Another core part of my project was how I could use AI to create a custom and cohesive style of game art, and what carefully worded prompts I would have to use to find the exact art style I envisioned for my Game.
What's next for Marwyn
I would love to use several story concepts I have used in Marwyn to produce lengthier, and more extensive projects!
