Inspiration
We wanted to make a game that would genuinely stress you out. Our biggest inspiration was Five Nights at Freddy's, where you're trapped in a single room, flipping between camera screens, trying to survive until morning. We loved that feeling of being stuck with limited information and too many things to watch at once, so we kept the core idea and moved it somewhere even more isolated: Mars.
Instead of animatronics hunting you down, the threats come from the planet and the base itself. Systems fail, things break, and the player has to keep up with maintenance events to survive. If you fall behind, the pressure stacks up fast.
What it does
The player is stationed in one room on a Mars base, monitoring several screens. Throughout the game, dangerous events pop up that require the player to perform maintenance before they spiral out of control.
How we built it
We built the game with plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript* and used Python to work with the ElevenLabs API for generating voice audio.
We chose this stack on purpose. Some of our team members were new to programming, and plain web technologies meant almost no installation or setup. Everyone could open the project in a browser and start contributing right away instead of spending the hackathon fighting with frameworks and build tools.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges we faced was using GitHub as a team. Since several of us were new to version control, we ran into conflicts and mistakes that caused us to lose progress partway through the hackathon.
What we learned
- How to collaborate with Git properly. Losing work taught us the importance of committing often, pulling before pushing, working on separate branches, and communicating before merging.
- How to build a game loop without a game engine.Managing timers, events, and multiple screens in plain JavaScript gave us a better understanding of how games work under the hood.
- How to integrate an external API. Using ElevenLabs showed us how to bring AI-generated audio into a project to make it more immersive.
What's next
We'd like to add more event types, more nights with increasing difficulty, and more voice lines to make the Mars base feel even more alive. We'd also like to implement AI into our project where it give us random fact about space and elevenlabs will voice the message.
