Inspiration

Across Africa, millions of entrepreneurs run entire businesses from a single smartphone. They sell products through WhatsApp and Instagram, track orders manually, receive payments through mobile money transfers, and manage inventory from memory.

I was inspired by the reality that many small businesses do not fail because they lack good products — they fail because they lack access to simple digital tools that make selling easier.

Most existing e-commerce platforms are too complex, too expensive, or not designed for the realities of African commerce. Sellers need something mobile-first, AI-powered, and incredibly fast.

That inspired me to build MarketMate AI — an AI-powered e-commerce platform that helps African entrepreneurs create storefronts, generate product listings, manage orders, and automate business workflows using AI.

The core vision was simple:

Turn a phone photo or simple idea into a complete online product listing in under 60 seconds.

What it does

MarketMate AI is a production-ready AI commerce platform built for social-first businesses.

The platform allows sellers to:

  • Create AI-generated online storefronts
  • Upload and manage products
  • Manage orders and customers
  • Accept mobile money payments
  • Access analytics and CRM tools
  • Use an AI business assistant
  • Generate product listings using AI
  • Generate product images using AI
  • Create products directly from photos

The platform includes two major AI-powered product workflows.

Snap & List

A seller uploads a product photo, and AI automatically generates:

  • Product name
  • Description
  • Suggested pricing
  • Category
  • Tags
  • Marketing-ready product details

Describe & Generate

If the seller does not have a product image, they can simply describe the product in text.

Example:

“Spicy Ghanaian groundnut soup served in a traditional earthenware bowl.”

The AI then generates:

  • A realistic product image
  • Product title
  • Description
  • Suggested pricing
  • Product category

The platform transforms product creation from a manual process into an AI-assisted workflow.

How we built it

We built MarketMate AI using MeDo as the primary AI development environment.

The platform was developed in iterative phases instead of trying to generate everything at once.

Development Process

We started by building the core platform:

  • Authentication system
  • Product management
  • Orders dashboard
  • CRM system
  • Analytics pages
  • Public storefront
  • Checkout system
  • AI assistant

After the foundation was complete, we focused on solving the biggest seller pain point:

Creating product listings manually takes too long.

To solve this, we implemented a multimodal AI workflow that supports:

  • Product image analysis
  • AI-generated descriptions
  • AI-generated pricing suggestions
  • Text-to-image product generation
  • Async image generation pipelines
  • Secure AI server-side processing

The architecture was designed so all AI calls happen securely through Supabase Edge Functions, ensuring API keys never reach the frontend.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was building the asynchronous AI image generation workflow.

Generating images is not instant. The system had to:

  1. Submit generation requests
  2. Poll for completion
  3. Retrieve Base64 image data
  4. Convert and upload files to storage
  5. Generate public URLs
  6. Sync everything back to the frontend

Another major challenge was ensuring that AI-generated product analysis returned structured and reliable JSON consistently.

Prompt engineering and response validation became critical to maintaining accurate outputs.

We also had to carefully design secure backend workflows so sensitive API keys were never exposed to the client application.

Maintaining a clean and scalable TypeScript codebase while rapidly shipping AI features across a large application was another challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that MarketMate AI evolved from a single idea into a fully functional AI-powered commerce platform.

  • Creating an AI-powered onboarding system
  • Developing a dual-mode AI product creation workflow
  • Implementing AI-generated product image creation
  • Building secure serverless AI infrastructure
  • Maintaining zero TypeScript and linting errors
  • Designing a responsive and PWA-ready application
  • Successfully integrating multimodal AI into real-world commerce workflows

One of our biggest achievements was reducing the process of product listing creation into a workflow that can be represented as:

What we learned

This project taught us that AI becomes most powerful when it removes friction from real workflows instead of simply acting as a chatbot.

We learned:

  • How to architect AI-powered production systems
  • How to integrate multimodal AI into real products
  • How to build async serverless workflows
  • How to securely handle AI infrastructure
  • How to structure scalable frontend/backend systems
  • How to collaborate effectively with AI development agents

We also learned that building for African markets requires understanding real user behavior instead of copying solutions designed for other regions.

The future of commerce in Africa is likely to be:

  • Social-driven
  • Extremely accessible

We plan to continue expanding MarketMate AI into a complete AI commerce ecosystem for African entrepreneurs.
