Inspiration

As a teacher, I LOVE the teaching aspect of education but not the arduous process of marking handwritten examinations and managing learner's grades, with MARKA, that time consuming task is done with ease, accuracy and effectiveness.

What it does

MARKA primarily marks handwritten examinations and scores the learners scripts based on predefined answer model specified in the system by the teachers. These marked scripts are then organized to help the teachers have access to the scores and offers insightful insight to the teachers and school administrators.

MARKA can also be used to transform handwritten exams question into a ready-to-print typed-PDF document (in a breeze!) and also have an administrator oversight into their teachers marking process to promote transparency and accountability; amongst other interesting features.

How we built it

MARKA utilizes Google APIs like Vision API for text detection in handwritten snapped scripts. The detected text is then organized into a structured data which is then marked against the predefined answer model specified by the teacher.

Challenges we ran into

The first problem was dealing with wrong spellings, some by one letter misplacement; and then we struggled with recognizing which answer in the student's scripts matches the answer model before even doing the actual marking. These two problems were solved by intensive research and leveraging existing solutions and libraries like NLP.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We can efficiently mark and handwritten exams and provide the teacher a comprehensive feedback for analysis. Also, our questions transformation functionality now saves valuable time in exams preparation.

What we learned

Expanded our knowledge and experience in model training, real world problem solving and building adaptable and flexible system for robust situations.

What's next for MARKA

MARKA will not be limited for exams marking and management, it is planned to be the number one education administrative tasks solution like preparing lessons and teaching aids for educators. It will become a global community for educators to share their expertise and transform learners life.
