🌊 Inspiration
We were motivated to create this map by the current problems of saving the population of sea animals and the fact that people often do not realize how diverse marine life is. While climate change, pollution, and overfishing persist to be the major risks of the marine species we felt that there should be a platform that fosters awareness of such problems to the community. Each of the arrested species is presented in order to draw people’s attention to the problem and encourage them to act in support of marine animals.
🐬 What It Does
Marine Masterpieces is an educational website for species at risk Marine Life section dedicated to offer detailed backgrounds of the selected marine species and directions on how the users can help to the improved conservation. The website contains easily understandable information for every profile’s species and their role in the ocean’s complex life and ecosystems.
🔧 How We Built It
To accomplish this, we constructed the platform in React with emphasis on a modular componentization style to improve maintainability and flexibility. Every species has its own page developed as React component with images, structured content and links to the related actions about species conservation. For design, we adopted CSS for an oceanic layout enhanced by optimized images to enable easy navigation. The data is also in markdown to ensure it can be easily edited through the interface and by the team.
🚧 Challenges We Ran Into
It was harrowing going back to square one to distill difficult information about these creatures into potent and pithy stories that were also scientifically unaltered for every species. Some design issues that we encountered include: The appropriate display of pictures and how to improve loading time for picture Optimizing the website for different devices. Finding the right balance between fun and simple navigation for the user was a process of iteration with a couple of designs and testing with people before narrowing it down to the final look.
🎉 Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
It is great to be able to design an application that people of all ages consider knowledgeable and visually appealing for marine conservation purposes. We have therefore ensured that the current design of the project leaves room for its update, revision or even expansion whereby; new species profiles can be incorporated easily. We also pride ourselves on our team’s ability to educate people on conserving even as we continue to do it in the simplest manner possible.
📘 What We Learned
Marine Masterpieces brought us the understanding of the importance of the narrative in conservation as well as an idea of how to format educational material effectively. In the area of knowledge enhancement, new state-of-practice techniques in React programming, modularity, and responsive design were gained. Moreover, we learned about the role of UX in conveying scientific data.
🌍 What's Next for Marine Masterpieces
In future, we would like to extend this project by including more species and the special sections might involve the possibility of quizes, donation possibilities to the respective conservation organizations etc. New features that we also contemplate for the website are a blog section where the readers would find various articles with the information on current conservation issues and further updates. Finally, we desire for Marine Masterpieces to be an ongoing project that can not only inform people on marine conservation but also create a community of interested individuals worldwide.
