About the Project
Inspiration
Marine energy from waves, tides, and ocean currents has great potential to provide clean and sustainable power. However, marine energy systems operate in harsh environments, where continuous exposure to waves, currents, vibration, and changing temperatures can affect equipment performance.
This inspired us to build a system that can monitor marine energy systems in real time and identify potential equipment problems before they lead to major failures.
What We Built
We developed an IoT-based real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance system for marine energy systems.
The system collects parameters such as wave height, current speed, temperature, vibration, and power generation from sensors. The collected data is processed and analyzed using AI/ML techniques to detect abnormal behavior and predict possible equipment failures.
A dashboard provides operators with a clear view of:
- Real-time environmental conditions
- Power generation and performance
- Equipment health
- Fault and anomaly alerts
- Analytics and maintenance insights
Our goal is to help operators move from reactive maintenance to predictive maintenance, reducing unexpected breakdowns, maintenance costs, and downtime.
How We Built It
We designed the system around three main components:
- Data Collection – Sensor and dataset information is collected for marine environmental and equipment parameters.
- AI/ML Analysis – Machine learning models analyze the data to identify abnormal patterns and estimate equipment health.
- Monitoring Dashboard – A user-friendly dashboard displays live readings, analytics, equipment status, and alerts so that operators can make faster decisions.
What We Learned
Through this project, we learned how IoT, data analytics, machine learning, and real-time visualization can work together to solve an industrial problem.
We also gained practical experience in data preprocessing, model development, dashboard design, system integration, and presenting complex sensor data in a simple way.
Challenges We Faced
One of our main challenges was working with marine energy data, which can contain changing environmental conditions and irregular patterns. Selecting useful parameters, preprocessing the data, and identifying meaningful patterns required careful analysis.
Another challenge was designing the dashboard so that large amounts of technical information could be understood quickly by an operator.
We overcame these challenges through iterative testing, data analysis, model improvement, and continuous refinement of the dashboard.
Our Vision
Our vision is to make marine energy systems smarter, safer, and more reliable.
Instead of waiting for equipment to fail, our system aims to provide an early warning so that maintenance can be planned in advance.
