Inspiration
I've always wanted to apply the artistic style transfer to a cool problem, this challenge was a natural fit! I also needed to make use of AR to share the experience, which led me to the retail environment. Connect people to the history and story of Marimekko while they explore the physical retail space. Content generation allows people to connect their creations in a small way to Marimekko, something that was almost impossible before.
What it does
Retail Experience
A traditional use for AR, allowing a user to explore a physical retail space and augment the experience with content that’s alive! Real-time social media content throughout the store, rich media (like video) on the walls, augmented reality only loyalty programs (discounts, collections), and content created by users and shared through the Marimekko app!
Content Generation
Learns the style of a Marimekko pattern and applies the ‘filter’ to an image that a user draws. Connecting a users creation with the world of Marimekko. Sharing the joy of colours and patterns with everyone using modern technology.
How I built it
Implemented on iOS using Swift, ARKit, and Spritekit. Content generation was done using artistic style transfer, based on A Neural Algorithm of Artistic Style (arXiv:1508.06576), implementation can be found in the credit section below.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Getting a functioning proof of concept running, filming the mobile application and the content generation, and turning it into a finished demo.
What I learned
There is an easier way to make videos, but After Effects has served me well! I learned a lot about what’s happening in the world of AR and VR. I also learned a lot about Marimekko and the textile industry in Finland!
What's next for Marimekko ARR
Art Installation? Mobile app?
