Teachers today are managing increasingly large classrooms, which makes it tough to provide every student with individual attention. At the same time, AI has completely changed how students complete their work. A correct assignment doesn't always mean a student actually understands the material, and makes it harder to gauge true comprehension.

I built Margins to help bridge that gap. It’s an AI-powered assessment platform designed to help teachers see what their students truly understand, uncover hidden misconceptions, and figure out what needs to be revisited in the classroom.

As a student, I would always write notes, questions, or thoughts in the margins of my paperwork. My teachers would also leave feedback in the margins of my assignments. The project name was inspired by those very same margins, and as learning moves into digital spaces, those written remarks tend to get lost. Margins was created as a way to bring them back into view.

With Margins, teachers can quickly create short, ungraded check-ins, either writing their own questions or using AI to generate editable prompts and supporting images. When students submit a check-in, along with providing an answer, they also have to explain their reasoning. They can flag concepts they feel unsure about, and even ask private questions.

What makes Margins different is how it analyzes the responses. It evaluates correctness separately from demonstrated understanding. That means it can spot cases where a student stumbles onto the right answer through flawed reasoning, or where they're guessing. Margins then analyzes these patterns across the whole class (or multiple classes), highlights students who might need extra help, and provides teachers evidence-backed insights. Live results can even be generated while a check-in is still actively in progress.

On the student side, the goal is encouragement. Instead of seeing a score, learners get clear feedback on what they did well, what they should revisit, and a practical next step to take. I created Margins to give teachers the visibility they need to meet students right where they are, catching those tiny misunderstandings early, long before they turn into major learning gaps.
