Inspiration Managing multiple responsibilities — from PhD research to job hunting and personal development — made it hard to stay consistent. I needed a system that would not just track tasks but show how consistent I was throughout the week. Inspired by the concept of “marginal gains,” I wanted to build something that celebrated small wins daily and tracked progress weekly.
What it does Marginal Gains+ is a personal productivity app that helps users break big goals into small, trackable daily tasks — and now also tracks weekly consistency. Users can organize their goals into custom categories (like “PhD + Research Work” or “Startup + Job Search”), complete up to five daily tasks, and view their weekly performance in a calendar-style layout. Progress bars and visual summaries show how many days and tasks were completed each week.
How I built it I built this app using Bolt by providing a long, detailed prompt describing the required layout, features, and color scheme. I asked for a three-column task tracker with progress bars, weekly tracking, and a soft yet vibrant design. Bolt generated most of the UI using Tailwind CSS, and I tweaked the logic and visuals to meet my workflow needs.
Challenges we ran into Structuring the week-view layout to be readable and compact
Accomplishments that we're proud of Build something that I would personally use that is tailor-made for my requirements and interests. Added a full weekly overview that visualizes consistency at a glance Created a daily + weekly planner that works as a routine-builder
What I learned Weekly tracking adds deeper insight into personal habits and progress Simplicity in layout can make multi-feature tools more user-friendly Bolt is great for bootstrapping full-featured apps from a prompt Visual motivation (like progress bars and daily dots) boosts discipline
What's next for Marginal Gains Enable saving task history and weekly stats using localStorage Add streak tracking and personalized reminder Mobile-first optimization for better usability on the go Allow exporting weekly reports and summaries Possibly release as a public productivity tool or planner app
